Aidan

Surf.

Fuck.

Get high.

Sounds like the perfect day to Aidan Callahan. As second-born son to Chicago’s most influential business owner, Aidan’s life has always been about responsibility. Tradition. Toeing the goddamn line. Just do as you’re told, Aidan. Don’t make waves.

Well, screw that. Riding waves is way more fun than making them.

Hawaii is paradise on earth. Smoking hot women. Tiny bikinis. As far as Aidan’s concerned, wild horses couldn’t drag him kicking and screaming back to the windy city. Or at least that’s what he thought.

When his brother crashes his Mercedes, killing himself on impact, Aidan finds himself next in line to the Callahan fortune and all the ties that come with it. And this time there’s no getting out of it.

Essie

A warm bed.

A steady job.

A brother who loves her.

For Essie Gray, life’s been one hard kick in the teeth after another. With her parents both dead, her brother is her only living relative. That is until Vaughn’s truck is written off, his life snatched away by the careless actions of a rich playboy in a flashy sports car.

Now, the only thing that will bring Essie peace is revenge. She must take what was taken from her. Only when the name Callahan has been wiped from the face of the earth forever will she be able to start living again.

Of course, the new head of the Callahan Corporation isn’t what she expected. Aidan’s sexy and sad, and just as damaged as she is. Will she be able to distance herself enough to accomplish her goal?

After all, ruining a man’s really hard when you find yourself falling for him…

"She's beautiful. She's messed up. She's broken, and the sad, shitty thing is that I'm not while enough to fix her. But I digress. maturity would be better to start from the beginning, instead of what might be our bitter end."

Opening with a bang, pun intended, Heart Breaker lured me in and wove a sirens song within the prologue. Curious by nature I needed to find out what chain of events led two very broken people to try to smash their pieces to smithereens.

Five years previously Essie is comfortable in her own skin, living a life full of struggles but content with her meager but happy lot in life. Her mother had assed in childbirth leaving her with a shell of a father who couldn't move past the loss. Raised by her neighbour and brother Essie has learned to find joy in the simple things. Planning their first Christmas together in their own small flat Essie is grateful for everything has brother has done so selflessly for her. Vaughn has been her rock, sheltering her from the grimness of their situation, providing safety and love in a world that shunned them. Only having each other has made them very reliant on one another that is until one day just before their perfect Christmas fate has other plans for them.

Aidan, the black sheep of the Callahan family is living his life as he sees fit. Earning his way by tutoring tourists to surf he is estranged from his brother and parents. Poles apart he has settled in Hawaii enjoying life and has cast off the expectations of his family to help run the business, wanting no part of the Callahan legacy. His brother Alex issues an ultimatum to return at Christmas or be disinherited. Yet still Aidan refuses to return. Referring his simple life of surf, sex and sunshine. That is until a life shattering accident makes him the sole Callahan left to rule the empire.

A car accident kills Vaughan outright ripping away Essie's support, family and friend. The woman she has become withers and dies at the graveside the moment she makes eye contact with him. Saying his final farewells to his family that was killed in a car accident, his brother at the wheel taking their parents home after a Christmas party, Aiden connects with a lone woman across the cemetery. One moment changes them forever setting them on a path to destruction. Essie is broken, deciding the only way to find happiness is to end the Callahan name once and for all, taking her grief and pain and gift wrapping in vengeance. Working hard to infiltrate the business she is ruthless in her plan to bring him down and destroy him. A stranger that she holds accountable for the sins of his brother. Likewise Aidan changed in that moment, during your most vulnerable and desperate times your true self is exposed. Aidan steps up and takes the reins of the company feeling responsible for the many employees that would suffer if he let the business crumble. Taking a backseat he secretly keeps track of the mysteriously damaged woman he saw at the graveside of her brother that his kin had been responsible for taking away. Following her career and helping out furtively when opportunity arose Aidan is intrigued by her motives. He is attracted to her physically but the game of cat and mouse has him spellbound.

Essie finally seizes an opportunity to destroy him but once she has met him her plans evolve and spiral out of control. Will the fires of revenge burn too brightly and destroy her too? Will her plans turn to nothing more than ashes of bitterness? As you can probably tell I loved reading this book. it's part one in a two part series and can not wait to find out what their conclusion will be. Their inner darkness recognises the shadows that live within each other but can she see past her plans to destroy him? It's suspenseful and full of intrigue. Essie develops from a slightly sweet and naive young woman to an embittered grief shrouded dominant heartless lady that uses people for her own ends. Aidan is care free and selfish but in his grief he grows into a man his parent's would have been proud of. They are the flip side of the same coin and the parallels are clear. The story moves with a fantastic pace and develops quickly leaving you desperate for more. Aidan is a sexy enigma and Essie may very well be his downfall, destruction comes gift wrapped in red lace.

A five star read.

well this books starts off with a bang, literally, so what's not to like right. well there is so much more. we travel back 5 years. Essie is enjoying life, it may not be the best but it's alot better than what what her and her brother Vaughan had. Essie was living with her brother, her protector,. Vaughan has always looked out for Essie even when he was six. Essie wants nothing more than to make up for every thing he's done for her. What was supposed to be a wonderful Christmas vacation with just her and her brother turned out to be the worst holiday if her life it she owes it all to the Callahan.
Aidan might be a Callahan but it didn't believe in the Callahan way of life, he wanted to make it on his own the way he wanted, not dependent on the Callahan name or money. When one call changes everything. 5 years pass and Essie is on a mission, discredited the Callahan name. When she meets up with Aidan and really sees him can she let go of the bitterness or will it eat her alive. Wow there is so much I could say but it wouldn't do it justice. This is the first part in a 2 book series and I need bk. 2 like now. I was on the edge of my seat so excited to see what happens next. what a story. definitely a must read and definitely a 5 star.
